Basic Membership Package

Every first-year student participating in Aggie Access Learning Communities receives

  • Members Log-in to the AALC website for membership directory, chat, event registration, and more
  • Pre-registration for reserved core-curriculum class sections:  two sections in the fall semester, two sections in the spring semester
    • smaller sections of 25-30 students
    • cohort embedded sections of 25-30 students within a larger lecture section, usually with a reserved lab together in sciences, for example
  • Pre-registration in LBAR 181: Learning Community Seminar in fall and spring
  • Community Activities scheduled weekly as part of seminar
  • New Student Conference Welcome Lunch
  • Peer Mentors
  • Faculty/Staff Namesake Mentor
  • Community T-shirt
  • Community Retreat during Gig 'Em Week
  • Year-round Academic Advisors in General Academic Programs, in addition to their academic advisors in the college or major
  • Year-round Professional Staff for troubleshooting the first year and as a resource for the years that follow
  • Social and Optional Events throughout the first year
  • Option to live on-campus in the Living-Learning Community in either Hobby Hall or Schuhmacher Hall
  • Use of the Access Activity Center (aka "Lounge") for study

First-Year Learning Outcomes

Students participating in the Aggie Access Learning Communities will intentionally focus on four areas for exploration and development during the freshman year: Community, Diversity, Discovery, and Responsibility.

 

COMMUNITY.   Our students will...

  • Build a positive community of learners including faculty, staff, namesakes, mentors, and other students
  • Create a network of support to assist with the transition to college
  • Create an inclusive environment to connect with others of different backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities
  • Understand the role, duty, responsibility, and commitment required as a member of a community (AALC, TAMU, B/CS, Global Society)
  • Identify involvement and service opportunities that positively impact the community and align with their personal goals utilizing their talents, strengths, and insight

DIVERSITY.   Our students will...

  • Explore and recognize how each person’s history and culture influences their identity, values, and beliefs
  • Demonstrate respect for people, ideas, culture, and perspectives that are similar or different than their own identities or ideologies
  • Understand the differences among oppression, prejudice, racism, discrimination, and privilege
  • Address issues of stereotypes, discrimination, privilege and insensitivity towards others to move towards a just society

 

DISCOVERY.   Our students will...

  • Be able to identify and utilize the appropriate campus resources to support learning and personal development
  • Develop and practice successful skills and strategies for learning and academic success
  • Begin to recognize the value of connecting skills in the classroom with outside experiences
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of being a college student
  • Explore career options and the associated majors leading to that profession

RESPONSIBILITY.  Our students will...

  • Understand and act in accordance to the Aggie Code of Honor in and outside of the classroom
  • Understand the impact and consequences of their actions on themselves, their character, and community
  • Successfully transition into the role and life of a college student while demonstrating ethical and responsible behaviors necessary for their newly acquired independence
  • Recognize the importance of using appropriate security measures with online technology and consistently practice those methods.
  • Demonstrate effective communication: Give and receive constructive feedback, Utilize appropriate means of communication for the intended audience, and Articulate thoughts well
  • Clarify academic focus and career direction  through articulating educational and personal goals
  • Identify and utilize individual talents, strengths, interests and positive personal qualities
